With a transdisciplinary approach, C-Hub is presented as a dialogue space for young people to create opportunities from the challenges and problems faced by society today. These opportunities are developed with the spirit of social entrepreneurship (sociopreneuship) which has been tested to provide social as well as economic impacts. C-Hub Faculty of Social Sciences UGM wants to present new learning to facilitate the birth of new social entrepreneurs who are able to become a catalyst for social change in a better direction.

Quoting Bornstein and Davis (2010) social entrepreneurship is a process or activity carried out by citizens to solve various social problems such as income inequality, famine, illiteration, and corruption. From this understanding, a social entrepreneur is not just seeking profit, but there is social activism that is inherent in activities carried out by social entrepreneurs.

Therefore, this material is presented to facilitate talents to understand and analyze social problems, develop solutions to social problems, and apply solutions to social problems in their social entrepreneurial activities. FISIPOL UGM through Creative Hub conducts a breakthrough curriculum oriented to knowledge, skills, networking, and the mentality of social entrepreneurship innovators that are able to become a catalyst for social change in a better direction. Based on processes and outcomes, the curriculum is packaged in start-up project-based social entrepreneurship models for issues relevant to social, political, and resource management issues.

why socio
preneurship?

In the two problems above, universities are faced with the reality of disruption that is so fast. Educational institutions face various challenges with exponential ICT development. This threatens its relevance as an ‘educator’. It is not impossible that a university-class institution can lose its relevance. The changing character of students, the development of generations of Y (millenials) and even Z which falls into the category of digital natives also bring changes to the learning atmosphere in universities.

These changes cannot be separated from what is currently being discussed. Disruption. This term is considered to represent current symptoms and phenomena that do not go as usual. A development that is not linear but not revolutionary. This is a new, unpredictable phenomenon and gives more value to people’s lifes. This phenomenon does not only change the face of the business world but also education. This requires the creation of innovations from the organizing institutions. To answer this real challenge, requires a different learning approach.

In the complexity of the problems above, social entrepreneur- ship becomes the choice as it can be a way out at least in the two of these problems. First, the spirit of entrepreneurship in it is a solution to the problem of the high educated unemployment rate that has been an economic and social burden. However, in contrast to the concept of entrepreneurship in general which emphasizes economic calculations, sociopreneur tends to emphasize on social impact that is able to solve social problems. Second social entrepreneurship is the bridge to bring the gap between knowledge that is gained in universities with the real needs in the community. In addition, social entrepreneurship encourages economic development which emphasizes on equitable welfare, not merely growth which tends to increase inequality (Gini Ratio).

There are at least five important values that become C-Hub pressure that are highlighted by C-hub through social entrepre- neurship programs. 1) There is a social mission that underlies every innovation that is born. 2) Innovation is developed with the spirit of empowerment that is not only beneficial for founders but also the community as users. 3) Upholding ethics in business by paying attention to the noble values that grow in the community. 4) The existence of re-investment for a larger social mission. 5) Seeking sustainability based on the outcomes. In realizing these five values, Social Return of Investment (S-ROI) is the foundation in measuring the success of a business.
